Home Decor Choices Can Help You Go Green People all over the globe are becoming more aware of environmental issues, but an expanding army of concerned 'citizens of earth' are extending the concepts of 'eco-friendly', 'sustainable', 'green' and 'organic' to include even their home decor. Fortunately, it doesn’t require a lot of cash, brain-power or a specialized education to join the home décor movement that is determined to make a difference. And don’t forget that eco-friendly home décor is friendly both to the environment and to your family’s health. Where do you start? The first thing to do is take stock. According to Josh Dorfman, ‘green’ entrepreneur and author of The Lazy Environmentalist, going green means addressing three basic areas: energy and water conservation, indoor air quality, and materials -- and all can be affected by home décor choices. The difference between organic and eco-friendly is that organic refers to agriculture or food that is grown without harmful pesticides or toxins. Eco-friendly is a term used to describe products or the making of products that have less of a harmful impact on the environment. Eco-friendly products can be one of three things, Pyun explains in a pre-interview. They are made out of:
Something recycled, like plastic milk jugs that end up in furniture.
Something that grows quickly and can be replenished, like bamboo.
Organic-like cotton that was raised without chemicals or pesticides. Home decorating for Bob Gerber, owner of a beach house located in Kitty Hawk, used to be frustrating until he discovered the use of outdoor art prints. "Every season I would buy some art of the Outer Banks area to hang around the deck and patio, and at the end of the season, throw it away due to the abuse the climate and young clients had inflicted. When a friend from Florida told me about some canvas prints he kept outside on his beach side patio that did not get affected by the weather, I decided to try them. They worked amazingly well -- no damage from peanut butter fingerprints or from the salt air. And no replacement costs for me this spring." Many wine lovers prefer wooden wine racks, as they’re easiest to blend in with most decors. Wooden wine racks come in a variety of wood styles, so your choices are numerous. We prefer an aged wood look to a wine rack, mostly because of the similarity to wooden wine barrels and the winery atmosphere. You may even wish to consider owning multiple wine racks. This is a common option for those with large wine collections, or those who wish to use one wine rack as a decorative piece with another for simple storage. Still others use one larger wine rack, complemented by a small table top wine rack for easier accessibility. |
